What Are the Stages of Gum Disease?

Gum disease rarely shows up all at once. It usually builds gradually, starting with irritation known as gingivitis that's easy to miss. Left alone, this irritation and inflammation can progress to the kind of bone loss that can threaten a tooth's survival. Dentists in Whitby and throughout Ontario generally describe that progression in two broad phases: gingivitis and periodontitis. Periodontitis, or advanced gum disease, is classified by how much damage has happened and how fast it's moving. If your gums have been bleeding or feel different than usual, knowing roughly where you are in that progression is a useful starting point, and dental implants sometimes become part of the conversation once gum disease has already cost someone a tooth.

At our dental offices in Whitby and Vaughan, Dr. Dan Diamond and our local teams can help you understand where your current stage of gum disease sits and the treatments available to you from dental cleanings to dental implants. We're here to protect your smile.

Gingivitis: The Stage That's Still Reversible

Gingivitis is the mildest, earliest form of gum disease. Gums turn red, swollen, and bleed easily, often with little or no discomfort, which is exactly why it gets missed so often. No bone loss has happened yet, and with a professional cleaning and better home care, gingivitis is fully reversible. This is also the point where a small habit change, like flossing consistently instead of occasionally, tends to make the biggest difference.

When Gingivitis Turns Into Periodontitis

Left untreated, plaque works its way below the gumline, and the bacteria there trigger ongoing inflammation. That inflammation is what starts breaking down the tissue and bone supporting the teeth. Gums begin pulling away, forming pockets that trap more plaque and get progressively harder to keep clean, even with careful brushing. Once this shift happens, a routine cleaning alone usually isn't enough to reverse it.

What Happens If It's Left Untreated

As periodontitis advances, more bone and tissue are lost, and teeth can become loose enough to fall out or need to be removed. That's usually the point where dental implants in Whitby enter the picture, since a missing tooth root needs to be replaced with something that can support a new tooth the way the original root did. Getting to that point takes time, which is really the argument for catching gum disease earlier rather than later.

The earlier gum disease is caught, the simpler it usually is to treat, and the less likely it is to end in tooth loss. Dr. Diamond and our team have more than 25 years of experience, with locations in both Vaughan and Whitby. If it's been a while since your last cleaning or your gums don't feel right, our Whitby office is a good place to get it checked.
